Plextek has developed codec and compression techniques to enhance the quality of CCTV surveillance images.
Based on JPEG2000, it is intended to improve wireless video performance.
"Current video surveillance techniques work well over wired networks, but wireless links add noise and latency that standard techniques such as H.264 and JPEG2000 fail to cope with," said the firm. "The result is intermittent and blurred images which make it difficult to identify perpetrators."
The firm will not reveal anything else about the compression technique, nor quantify image improvements.
"With our image processing techniques, the technology now exists to dramatically improve CCTV image quality without the need for massive expenditure," said Plextek spokesman Graham Tootell. "This means CCTV images can help to identify 'who?' as well as the traditional 'what?'."
