Marvell is working on putting wireless and wireline home networking capabilities on the same chip and hopes to launch such a product in 2013.
The latest Marvell home-networking product is a two-chip wireline transceiver which works over coax, powerline and twisted pair phone line. It delivers 200Mbits/sec over powerline and conforms to the G.hn standard.
“The main driver for home networking is IPTV”, Marvell’s Ramon Garcia told EW, “all the major telcos are supplying it including BT Vision, China Telecom, Telefonica, Verizon, AT&T and Deutsch Telekom. Most of the IPTV providers are relying on powerline.”
Asked why wireline was a better option for home networking than wireless, Garcia said: “It’s not affected by walls.”
