Intel, IBM, GloFo, TSMC, Samsung to spend $4.4bn in Albany

Intel, IBM, Samsung, Globalfoundries and TSMC, backed by the State of New York , are to invest $4.4bn over five years in an expansion of  the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany.

The money will be spent on developing a new generation of process technology and may address 450mm wafer processing.

The investment will retain or create 6,900 high-tech jobs paying an average of $100,000 a year, plus 1,900 construction jobs.

The State of New York will contribute $400 million over five years.

The investment was announced by the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, who said that Europe, Asia and the Middle East had all competed with New York to secure the investment.
