DSEi: Military technology on parade

Electronics firms are major suppliers to the global military systems market and their role will be highlighted in the International Electronics Pavilion at this year’s DSEi defence technology exhibition taking place on September 13 – 16 at ExCeL in London.

In a special five–page feature we hear from exhibitors and preview some of the technology on view.

Marl International’s stand (N4191) at DSEi will feature its infra-red LED assemblies providing energy efficient night vision for military vehicle crews.
Marl will be exhibiting its infra-red LED assembly for the first time, installed on a module with UKAP floodlight for use with both video and night vision cameras.
This allows military vehicle crews to see clearly whatever the ambient light conditions.
For this project the Cumbria–based manufacturer built its infra-red LEDs into robust anodised aluminium housings to suit the customer’s specification, including sealing to IP67.

The big focus this year for Schroff will be the company’s Varistar MIL 901D ruggedised 19in. cabinet, which has been designed to protect sensitive electronic systems from demanding environments such as those encountered during operation at sea.
Suitable for use on frigates, aircraft carriers and submarines, the cabinet has been independently tested in accordance with the MIL-STD-901D standard to confirm its robustness and stability under conditions of extreme shock.
In addition, its vibration resistance satisfies the requirements of MIL-STD-167.
The cabinet provides IP55 sealing against the ingress of dust and moisture, while its frame and covers are galvanised and powder coated to protect them from corrosion.

Letchworth-based contract electronics manufacturer HCD, which specialises in prototype and short-run production orders, is exhibiting at DSEi for the first time this year.
“We decided to exhibit at DSEI for the first time this year as we have seen a significant increase in business from the aerospace and hi-rel sectors and now number major aerospace and defence contractors such as BAE Systems and Thales among our customers,” said HCD director Carol Holmes.
“We can produce PCBs to IPC 610A-Class 3 and meet the new Def-Stan 61-5 issue 6 regulations issued only last year which cover PCBs for military power and protection devices,” said Holmes.

Amplifier Technology will show for the first time its range of high power broadband pallet amplifiers at the DSEi exhibition.
The pallet amplifiers use GaN technology, and there are three models covering different frequency bands.
The 9001 model is a power pallet amplifier that delivers a minimum saturated output power (P_Sat) of 100W over the frequency range 20-500MHz.
The 9004 amplifier is similar, also delivering 100W, operating in the 0.8GHz -1.0GHz frequency bands. The third model, the 9005, gives 100W saturated output power and operates at frequencies from 1.7GHz- 2.2GHz.

Powerstax will show for the first time in Europe the TVR3001, a 3000W DC-DC power conversion rack that has been developed specifically for harsh environmental conditions.
The rack is designed for use in vehicle or remote applications and the system is designed to protect the internal electronics from the ingress of dust.
Other developments in vehicle based power systems for communications systems include the TVS1001 ruggedised 1000W DC-DC power supply which has demonstrated ability to perform under the harshest of conditions with field proven use in military applications.

TDK-Lambda UK has a range of standard and configurable power AC-DC power supplies, DC-DC converters and programmable power supplies for rugged, high-reliability and lightweight COTS and modified COTS (MCOTS) products.
The CPFE series of baseplate-cooled AC-DC power supplies, for example, is available for either 500 or 1000W bulk power applications, these units can be paralleled together with active current share to accommodate increased power requirements and/or redundancy.
Within an extended temperature range (-40 to +85°C), the CPFE series does not require fan cooling, satisfying applications that need high power but cannot use fans or where the unit is sealed in an enclosure.

On view on Link Microtek’s stand will be the Basingstoke-based firm’s Azdec wire-free mobile communications system, which uses infra-red technology to provide totally secure short-range voice communications for a variety of military applications.
A fully operational Azdec system will be featured on the company’s stand, and there will also be an opportunity to see the system in situ on the bridge of a Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer docked alongside the ExCeL venue.
Since the Azdec system’s envelope of reception is well defined and there are no radio-frequency emissions, it is impossible to detect the signals by any conventional method.
As well as offering secure mobile communications, the Azdec system is ideal for use wherever electrical or acoustic noise is an issue or where intrinsically safe equipment is required.

XP Power‘s MTC35 and MTC50 series of commercial off the shelf (COTS) 35W and 50W DC-DC converters sport an input range from 10 to 40Vdc, and can handle transients up to 50Vdc for up to 100ms.
Single output modules are available with + 3.3, + 5, + 12, + 15 or + 28 VDC outputs and can be adjusted between -20% and +10% via an external trim pin.
When used in conjunction with XP Power’s DSF, FSO or MTF series of standard EMI filter modules, the MTC series comply with MIL-STD 1275A/B/C/D and MIL-STD 704A standards for surges and transients, and MIL-STD 461E/F for conducted emissions and susceptibility.
The units meet the environmental MIL-STD 810F specification that covers shock, vibration, humidity, temperature, salt spray and altitude.
