Kontron is to support Cavium's Octeon III with up to 48 cores.
"To meet the future security and high bandwidth demands of fixed and mobile service providers, Kontron will work with telecom equipment manufacturers to supply the next generation of commercial-off-the-shelf packet processing hardware based OCTEON III processors," said Kontron.
The combination of Kontron and Cavium technologies ensures application providers can achieve up to 100GbE wire-speed performance for a variety of deep packet inspection functions, said Cavium general manager Y Kim.
Octeon III chips have from one to 48 MIPS64 cores, running at up to 2.5GHz and "providing up to 120GHz of 64 bit compute power per chip", claimed Kontron.
Multiple chips can be combined into a single logical processor using Cavium's chip interconnect architecture.
They include hardware engines for: search, protocol parsing and traffic management, as well as cryptography, compression and deep packet inspection.
Applications are expected in cloud computing, core and edge routers, metro Ethernet, enterprise switches, 3G/4G/LTE base-stations, and mobile core infrastructure equipment.
