Electronics engineers working in the UK defence/aerospace sector can command an average salary of over £41,000, according to a salary survey carried out on the eve of the DSEi Exhibition.

The salary level reflects the strength of this engineering sector despite the affects of the general economic downturn and the prospect of budget cuts.

Electronics Weekly has collaborated with Jonathan Lee Recruitment to carry out a major survey of salary levels in the UK electronics industry.

“The jobs market, particularly in high technology areas such as electronics, has certainly come back far stronger and quicker than most people thought possible after the latest recession,” said Simon Roberts, regional manager West Midlands at Jonathan Lee Recruitment.

Average salary increase in the last 12 months in the sector was almost 2%, according to the survey, which contacted 1,160 electronics professionals during July and August.

A full spectrum of electronics companies was represented in the survey. Full results of the salary survey will be published next week.

Respondents worked for companies ranging in size from small organisations of less than 20 people up to major industrial groups with more than 3,000 employees.

The average age of respondent was 47 years.

However, average salary levels in the defence/aerospace sector are still some way behind the communications sector.

With an average salary of £47,400, communications is one of the highest paid sectors for UK engineers.

This year’s DSEi defence technology exhibition is taking place on September 13 – 16 at ExCeL in London.

Research for the the salary survey was carried out by Reed Business Insight for Electronics Weekly and Jonathan Lee Recruitment. Keep an eye out for the full results, which will be published next week.
