G24 Innovations (G24i), the Wales-based developer of dye sensitised solar cells, in collaboration with US firm Skyco Shading Systems has secured a contract with a global hotel chain to supply energy efficient shades in over 8,000 of its windows.
The hotel plans to deploy large scale solar systems indoors to use recycled light to produce electricity. The wireless shade system uses G24i’s Gen-3 indoor solar cell technology.
“The project represents a dawn of a new era for the solar industry with the creation of indoor applications that do not require government subsidies, while also delivering substantial savings to the building owner," said G24i chief operating officer, Richard Costello.
Cardiff-based G24 Innovations manufactures dye-sensitised thin film solar cells - which do not require silicon or other hard substrates and can be made on printing presses.
"Dye-sensitised thin film solar cells are unique in that they are extremely lightweight, durable, and produce electricity in low-light and indoor conditions," claimed G24.
"As a result, our solar cells are perfect for powering mobile electronic devices such as mobile telephones, cameras, and portable LED lighting systems. On a larger scale, flexible thin film cells integrate into clothing, tents, electronic advertising displays," said the firm.
According to Skyco president, Sandee Young, G24i’s indoor power technology will "greatly increase the use of energy efficient shade systems globally by substantially reducing installation costs.”
